I remember when I first came to the surface. I was frightened, but proud. My time had come. I would finally be one of the adults. I had been waiting for this since I first noticed my antennae shrinking. As I swam to the surface, I thanked the fire race for letting me be here today. I could feel the warm air brushing my head as I made my way to the top. When I got close enough, I made a wave and rode it the rest of the way up.

And then, all of a sudden, I was there. I looked around for the much-talked-about terrans, but there were none in sight. Confused, I swam forward, looking up at the sun. Although I saw no humans, avians were everywhere above me. I called up to them, but they did not answer. Why couldn't they hear me? Where were the humans?

The heat burned my pale flesh as I floated along the slow current. The elders had not told me of this feeling. Perhaps they had forgotten. Perhaps the sun had not burned them in this way. Was there something wrong with me? Was I going to fail already? Pushing these worries aside, I swam on. If I was going to dwell on the surface for an entire lightening, I had to find a suitable place to stay. Unfortunately, I didn't know what exactly qualified as suitable. Nevertheless, I did not quit. I did not sink back to the bottom to die as some had done. I did not stay on one place of the surface and get captured as others had done. I persevered. I had faith in the gifts the fire race had given me. That's why I'm where I am today.
